The successful completion of another project by Julian Mansel-Thomas, Chris Richards and Steve Duignan of PDL is the reconfiguring of the former Government Offices at Wynchway House for the Paul Sartori Foundation to a new Headquarters building. The project was completed on time, and within budget and we know the move to new premises will enable this local charity to continue its excellent work in the field of palliative care in the community.

National Park

PDL are proud to be involved as architects on two more very interesting private houses within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Both projects are well advanced on site, following a rigorous and demanding planning process.

Julian is currently overseeing an outstanding new build property overlooking Newport Golf Course and Beach, with Chris keeping a close watch on costs for the client, and Andrew has been monitoring the refurbishment and modernisation/extension of a cottage on the Angle Peninsula which overlooks the impressive Freshwater West Bay.

St Govan's Shopping Centre, Pembroke Dock

PDL are delighted to have submitted a planning application to modernise the Western Way street façade of this well-established shopping centre within Pembroke Dock. Both Carl and Andrew have designed a modern glass frontage, with coloured metal cladding which, along with the relocation of the existing artwork to the side of the building, will result in a bright, attractive and modern improvement to the town. Due to increasing workload, PDL have employed a new trainee architectural technician, Connor McGarvie who has joined the practice on a part-time basis in order to assist on surveys and all tasks associated with the day to day running of a busy Architects & Surveyors practice. Connor is studying Construction & Architectural Design Extended Diploma (Level 3) at Pembrokeshire College in Haverfordwest and is continuing his studies with the full support of the PDL team.

PDL are delighted to announce that they have employed a new architectural technician, Dan Evans BSc (Hons) who has joined the practice in order to provide architectural/surveying assistance and technical back-up. After obtaining his BSc in Architectural Technology from University of Wales Trinity St David in 2012 and prior to joining PDL he has been working on a freelance basis. Dan is also currently studying part-time for a Masters Degree in Heritage Practice at UWTSD, Lampeter and is a great asset to the practice.

West Wales Oldest Department Store

PDL, along with the contractor for the last phase of the redevelopment and extension of this family owned department store, have recently been reappointed for the next section of works.

This phase includes upgrading / extending the on-site warehouse facility, staff access and delivery pick up point, plus the extension to customers toilets to meet demand, led by the success of it's cafe. Survey and enabling works will take place imminently, prior to the busy Christmas period, with all consents having to be obtained to enable a prompt start on site in January 2017.

Residential Development On Edge Of Historic Town

The practice, on repeat instructions from the landowner, has recently been instructed to re-submit an outline planning application for a select residential development on a former semi-industrial site in a predominantly residential area for about 10 detached and semi-detached dwellings.

Replacement Conservatory Roof, Laugharne

Gareth Scourfield has led a team that have just satisfactorily completed an innovative replacement installation of a lightweight roofing system, comprising of plastic slates on grp rafters/ring beams and foam installation to tackle the age old problem of existing glazed conservatory roofs making the spaces virtually unusable as they are too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

The work took 4 days to complete on a very large exposed conservatory on top of a hill, and in exceptionally inclement weather, with gale force winds, and is an excellent example of how to solve the problem...

The practice has been appointed to provide surveying services to 4 teaching wings of this busy county town secondary school of over 1000 pupils, as part of the Welsh Governments ongoing 21st Century Schools programme, with the work being carried out by Carl Bentley, our senior surveyor.

Caroline James, the practices in-house Specialist Conservation Architect, has recently sent out tenders on behalf of Cadw (PDL are one of the framework practices in Wales for a number of disciplines) for a new access, disabled improvements and footbridge works for this Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade 1 listed structure in the Towy Valley in Carmarthenshire.  Tenders are currently being assessed by Cadw and works are expected to commence on site shortly, subject to the costs being within budget.

PDL are working with our clients to design an Eco house, based on Passivhaus principles, on this site on the outskirts of Haverfordwest. PDL headed up by Gareth Scourfield, are in the process of completing negotiations with PCC to convert 4 barns on the site into permanent residential use on the Fenton Home Farm Estate, Crundale near the County Town of Haverfordwest.  The units created will be the last on this extensive complex of buildings being converted to residential use.  They provide an excellent example of farm diversification.  It is hoped that subject to further reports being completed, and the NRW’s concerns being allayed, to finally receive positive determinations later this summer.

Fish Processing and Storage Units, Milford Docks

A team, led by Gareth Scourfield, Chris Richards and Steve Duignan, has recently handed over two buildings in the Docks to the Milford Haven Port Authority.  One of the units will provide 4 food standards units so that fish processing, particularly for shellfish, can be dealt with at the dockside, instead of having to be sent elsewhere in the country, with the second unit providing storage and cleaning facilities of the pallets that fish are landed from the trawlers in.

Steve Duignan is heading up a team of surveyors and engineers for the detailed work, having successfully obtained detailed planning permission for the re-provision of the Happy Days Nursery in the Havens Head Business Park, above Milford Docks, for the upgrading of the complex on the same site, using a pre-fabricated system once demolition of the existing building is complete.

PDL, headed by Chris Richards, have been appointed under Cadw’s Framework Agreements to provide CDMC services on high level wall repairs on this listed building in the shadow of the Cathedral.

Works are currently on site and are expected to be completed in Spring 2015, subject to the winter weather not being limiting.  The works consist of consolidation of stone walling, re-laying coping stones and generally working at height in areas restricted to the public during the quieter months of the year for visitor numbers.
